Officials monitoring weather advisory to decide morning actions

University officials are keeping close tabs tonight (Jan. 27) on the latest weather forecasts for the region calling for a wintry mix of snow and ice in the early morning hours beginning at 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28. The Office of Physical Plant is planning to deploy salt trucks and equipment early to prevent roadways, sidewalks and parking lots from freezing, in advance of the arrival of students and employees on campus.
Current forecasts predict temperatures will begin rising by mid-morning and should improve throughout the day. Penn State officials believe the pre-emptive salting and clearing of any snow or ice should allow University operations to continue on time, as scheduled.
Temperatures expected to be subzero; community urged to bundle up

Temperatures in the region and in some parts across the state are expected to dip below zero degrees Fahrenheit tonight and during the early hours of Tuesday (Jan. 22). Penn State faculty, staff and students are urged to be prepared for this extreme cold and to dress appropriately if you must go outdoors. Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling.
Winter weather delays activities and classes at University Park

Because of severe weather, Penn State, University Park, has delayed scheduled activities this morning. The delay started at 5 a.m. and will continue until 10 a.m.
Classes that begin at or after 10 a.m. will be held as scheduled. Employees who have been identified by their work unit as performing essential services should report as regularly scheduled unless advised otherwise by their supervisor.

Classes, activities to resume at University Park on Tuesday

Based on the current pattern of the storm, classes and activities are expected to resume as normal on Penn State's University Park campus Tuesday. Forecasters predict that winds from what is now post-tropical cyclone Sandy will peak overnight from Monday, Oct. 29, to Tuesday, Oct. 30, and that rainfall and wind will diminish significantly in the Centre Region by 6 a.m. Tuesday. Employees whose shifts begin after 6 a.m. should plan to report as scheduled. The University community should visit http://live.psu.edu/ as early as possible on Tuesday to see if there have been any changes in this decision to resume activities.

A small number of appointments have been canceled and those patients have been contacted. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- University officials are carefully monitoring the path of Hurricane Sandy as it moves at about 14 miles per hour toward land, with expected impacts of high winds and flooding. At this time, there are no plans to cancel or delay classes or activities on the University Park campus, since the brunt of the storm will not be focused over central Pennsylvania, although residents will experience inclement weather.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has announced the potential for severe weather across Pennsylvania from Sunday, Oct. 28 to Wednesday, Oct. 31. Forecasters predict that the remnants of Hurricane Sandy will merge with a growing trough of low pressure over the eastern United States to form a powerful coastal storm system. Across Pennsylvania, potential hazards associated with this storm include heavy rainfall, high winds and a chance for substantial snowfall in some areas of the state.

This year it seemed that very cold days were the minority, and most states had little snow.
