More than 100 handmade scarves donated to Special Olympics

Since 2003, Penn State Brandywine Student Affairs Specialist Diane Shorter and Associate Professor of Earth Sciences Laura Guertin have led an initiative to create handmade items for nonprofit organizations with an identified need. Again this year, campus and community members came together with knitting needles and crochet hooks to make scarves for Pennsylvania athletes competing in the 2012 Special Olympics USA.

Nearly 50 Penn State student-athletes, representing 10 different teams, helped Special Olympics Pennsylvania kick off the 42nd Annual Summer Games Thursday (June 9) on the University Park Campus. Sponsored by Sheetz, Inc., the Summer Games bring together more than 2,000 athletes, 750 coaches and 2,500 volunteers from across the state. The event is being held Thursday-Saturday on the Penn State campus for the 24th consecutive year.

First Beaver Stadium Run benefiting Special Olympcis set for April 25

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in the inaugural Beaver Stadium 5K Run/Family Fun Walk on Sunday, April 25 to benefit Special Olympics Pennsylvania, introducing a new Blue-White weekend tradition. The run will start at 10 a.m. in front of the Bryce Jordan Center on Curtin Road and move through Penn State's scenic campus, concluding with runners racing through the Beaver Stadium Tunnel and onto the Nittany Lions' grass field to the finish line.

Lady Lions hold Special Olympics clinic

Two groups of athletes - Special Olympians and the Lady Lions basketball team - filled the Bryce Jordan Center practice gym on Saturday, Jan. 9, as the Special Olympians participated in hands-on basketball skills and drills sessions led by the Lady Lions. More than two dozen such athletes rotated between three parts of the facility's practice gym, taking part in skills activities organized by the players and coaching staff. Lady Lions host Special Olympics clinic on Saturday

The Penn State Lady Lions will host a basketball clinic for approximately 30 Special Olympic athletes from Centre and Blair Countries on Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center. The participants will be invited to watch the end of the Lady Lions' practice and will then partake in a clinic from 2-3:30 p.m. The Special Olympic athletes and coaches will participate in various drills and activities and coaches will have an opportunity to learn additional coaching techniques. All clinic participants are also invited to be a guest of Lady Lion head coach Coquese Washington's for Sunday's Penn State women's basketball game against Indiana at noon.
