College of Education's Cycle-Thon 2012 kicks off fall semester

The seventh annual College of Education Cycle-Thon & 5K Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 9. The fundraising event, which features a 9-mile bicycle route and a 5-kilometer walk/run route, will start at the Chambers Building at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. It promises to provide a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the outdoors, while supporting the Summer College Opportunity Program in Education (SCOPE) in the College of Education.

The fifth annual College of Education Cycle-Thon will take place on Saturday, April 17, in State College, Pa. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and proceeds benefit the Summer College Opportunity Program in Education, which is a University Park-based program for rising high school juniors in historically underrepresented populations.

Fourth annual Cycle-Thon and 5K breaks records

A record 250 people attended the fourth annual Cycle-Thon and 5K on April 26 at Sunset Park. Cyclists, runners, walkers, and cheering family and friends enjoyed the nice weather, raffles, and bike demonstrations. The event was a fundraiser for SCOPE, which is a summer program for high school students interested in a career in education.

Steve and Carol Gentry will serve as the first honorary alumni track and field officials during the College of Education's 4th annual Cycle-Thon and 5K run/walk on April 26. Residents of State College, the Gentrys have been involved in track and field events since their days as students at Penn State and later as teachers in the State College Area School District.

First SCOPE student begins a career in education

This summer, when Keyairra Wright begins working with Teach for America shortly after graduating from Penn State, she'll be marking a landmark juncture for a signature College of Education program. Wright becomes the first participant of the Summer College Opportunity Program in Education (SCOPE) to enter the education profession. SCOPE's mission is to encourage high school teens from underrepresented groups to consider a career in teaching, counseling, special education, rehabilitation or educational administration.

Gilmartin commits $1.2 million for College of Education endowment

Children and undergraduate students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds will benefit from a program endowment established in Penn State's College of Education with a $1.2 million commitment from University alumnus John Gilmartin. Annual income from the Gilmartin Endowment for Enhancing Educational Opportunities will strengthen existing programs or help to create new initiatives that aim to improve the quality of educational experiences for inner city children, and might also support experimental schools and undergraduate scholarships.
