Penn State enrollment sees modest growth in 2011

University-wide application and 2011 official enrollment numbers have increased at Penn State for the sixth straight year, maintaining the University's position as one of the most popular universities in the nation. Penn State's total enrollment is 96,519 students, up 686 students from 2010, according to an annual "snapshot" count taken at the end of the sixth week of fall semester classes. Also, during the 2010-11 year, Penn State received nearly 122,000 applications across the University -- once again a new record, with nearly 7,000 more than in 2010 and 13,000 more than in 2009.

Strategic plan's academic goal teaches sustainability to students

Penn State's University Sustainability Council is drafting the University's first strategic plan for sustainability. The council is seeking public input for five-goal plan during the drafting process. The second goal of Penn State's Strategic Plan for Sustainability aims to educate students about sustainability. "Students are requesting more sustainability instruction, aware that employers are seeking to hire graduates who are knowledgeable about sustainability," said Rob Pangborn, vice president and dean for Undergraduate Education. "Penn State can play a unique role in addressing one of our society's most pressing issues by bringing faculty expertise and emerging research to the classroom, to produce graduates who also can lead in this effort."

Penn State contributes nearly $900,000 to United Way campaign

In the face of difficult economic times nationwide, Penn State employees generously came through to contribute $892,077 to the Centre County United Way's 2008 community fundraising campaign. The University far surpassed its goal of $800,000 for the year. "Just as in past economic slowdowns, Penn State employees once again stepped up to support the United Way, whose 37 member agencies offer the services that strengthen our families and community and improve the quality of life for everyone throughout Centre County," said Penn State President Graham Spanier. "We are very proud of the efforts of so many employees to offer help when it is needed more than ever."
