SAT prep courses offered at Penn State York and The Lancaster Center

High school students preparing to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) can find help through SAT preparation courses being offered at Penn State York and Penn State, The Lancaster Center throughout the spring.

The courses will provide valuable information regarding test format, proven test-taking strategies, a review of essential verbal, math, and critical reading skills as well as proper essay-writing techniques assessed in the SAT 1.

Cost for each four-session course is $210 and includes a copy of "The Official SAT Study Guide: For the New SAT" by the College Board.

Teachers and others in the education field can learn more about the master of education in teaching and curriculum degree, and a number of graduate certificates offered at Penn State York during two information sessions at the campus: from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 1, in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. The sessions are free and open to the public.
The 30-credit master of education degree in teaching and curriculum is designed to enhance the skills of teachers for public and private schools. The program focuses on three essential components -- curriculum, instruction and assessment -- that contribute to the organization's philosophy of learning, nurturance and scholarship. Courses are designed to reflect the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Leading literacy experts and professional development providers will share their expertise during "High-Impact Literacy Practices," when the Penn State York Summer Institute 2012 takes place June 18-22 at the campus. Registrations are still being accepted for this weeklong three-credit graduate course that meets from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. each day. This course also may be taken for Pennsylvania Act 48 hours.

'An evening with Henry Winkler' set for Oct. 24

Actor, director, and author Henry Winkler, better known by most people as "The Fonz" for his 10 years on the popular television show "Happy Days," will speak at Penn State York's Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24. Winkler will share his experiences dealing with the learning disability dyslexia and talk about his series of children's novels, "Hank Zipper: The World's Most Amazing Underachiever," inspired by his real life experiences.

Harry Potter likely to endure for generations, says literary expert

With the release of the movie "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" on Nov. 19, the official telling of the story of the boy wizard is nearing its end. But Steven Herb, director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Book at Penn State, says author J.K. Rowling's imaginative and well-crafted tale is likely to stay popular for generations to come.

Reward children for reading: Give them a book

For many years, educators and researchers have warned against giving children prizes or money for performance in school. Penn State Harrisburg faculty member and reading specialist Barbara Marinak echoes that warning but includes what she has found to be the best incentive to encourage children to read - a book. Beginning with her award-winning doctoral dissertation in 2005 which focused on third graders and followed by additional research studies in partnership with Clemson University Distinguished Professor of Education Linda Gambrell, assistant professor of Education Marinak concludes that children who receive books as a reward for reading accomplishments rather than tokens, money or prizes were much more likely to pick up a book in their free time.

Probing Question: What do children need to be successful readers?

Can you recite the words that come next? Chances are you were read the children's classic Good Night Moon or have read it to your own kids. You may remember a magical moment when the child on your lap suddenly pointed to the letters M... O... O... N... and proudly sounded out "moon"—and just like that, a reader was born!

First-year students at Penn State Harrisburg are again beginning their collegiate academic experience early this year. For the eighth consecutive year, all incoming first-year students are participating in a summer reading program which focuses on encouraging intellectual interaction among students even before their first semester of college begins in late August.

When he was five, LeRoy (a pseudonym) fell out of a tree. His broken arm was badly set; gangrene set in. After three years in the hospital, LeRoy returned to school. "From the elbow down, LeRoy's forearm was smaller, discolored, thin," writes Ray Simmers-Wolpow. "A stub, three fingers, and a flap was his left hand." He could not read.
