Baum receives honorary doctorate

Paul Frank Baum, Evan Pugh Professor of Mathematics at Penn State University, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the Australian National University. Baum received the degree during a December 2012 ceremony at which he gave an address about the value of perseverance. The Australian National University sponsored a concurrent three-day "Baum Fest" featuring lectures by mathematicians who are currently developing Baum's ideas.

Ping Xu named Eberly College of Science Distinguished Senior Scholar

Ping Xu, professor of mathematics at Penn State, has been named an Eberly College of Science Distinguished Senior Scholar. The title is given in recognition of a sustained record of extraordinary achievement in research and education. Holders of this position have had a profound effect on their fields through creative innovation and internationally acclaimed scientific leadership, as well as exceptional accomplishments in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.

Karl Schwede receives Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow award

Karl Schwede, an assistant professor of mathematics at Penn State University, has been honored with an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow award in recognition of his research accomplishments. Sloan Research Fellowships are intended to enhance the careers of the best young faculty members in seven fields of science: chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics.

Students invited to 'Explore the Worlds' March 3 at Penn State York

Middle and high school students will be able to learn about engineering, science, and information sciences and technology on Saturday, March 3, at Penn State York's "Explore the Worlds" event. The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will offer hands-on activities. A series of workshops for parents about choosing a college and paying for college also will be offered throughout the day. Registration is free, and complimentary lunch will be served.

STEM certificate helps prepare students for jobs of the future

Penn State York is continuing to offer the Chancellor's Honor Certificate in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), designed to provide students with the skills they need for jobs in the 21st century. Studies have shown that the demand for students with STEM degrees continues to grow. The certificate is designed for high school students taking part in the dual enrollment program.

Through dual enrollment, high school students can earn college credit while still in high school. A variety of courses are available at the campus for dual enrollment and courses toward the STEM certificate are included. High school juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 and qualifying Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores are eligible to take part in the program.

Wen Ching (Winnie) Li, professor of mathematics at Penn State University, has been named distinguished professor of mathematics. The honor -- which recognizes exceptional teaching, research, creativity, and service to the University community -- is awarded by the Office of the President of Penn State based on the recommendations of colleagues and the dean.

Penn State Beaver will host a meeting of the Beaver County Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Advocacy Coalition, 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, room 16, Student Union Building. The program is free and open to the public.

The evening's topic is "Proven Strategies to Compete in Regional and International Science Fairs." Guest speakers are Lisa Kosick, director of the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair, and Karen DeMarco, a science teacher for the Ambridge Area School District.

Alberto Bressan receives Italian mathematical union's Fichera Prize

Alberto Bressan, Eberly family chair in mathematics at Penn State University, will be awarded the Fichera Prize from the Italian Mathematical Union (IMU). The prize, which will be awarded during the general congress of the IMU in Bologna, Italy later this year, is assigned once every four years to the author of a paper of great significance in the field of mathematical analysis and applications.

Search for advanced materials aided by discovery of hidden symmetries

A new way of understanding the structure of proteins, polymers, minerals and engineered materials will be published in the May 2011 issue of the journal Nature Materials. The discovery by two Penn State researchers is a new type of symmetry in the structure of materials, which the researchers say greatly expands the possibilities for discovering or designing materials with desired properties. The research is expected to have broad relevance in many development efforts involving physical, chemical, biological, or engineering disciplines including, for example, the search for advanced ferroelectric ferromagnet materials for next-generation ultrasound devices and computers.

Bressan elected to Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters

Alberto Bressan, Holder of the Eberly Family Chair in Mathematics at Penn State University, has been elected a foreign member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters for his outstanding accomplishments in the field of mathematics. Founded in 1760, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters is the oldest learned academy in Norway.

A leading consulting engineer in U.S. to speak at Penn State Fayette

Dunstan Macauley, named one of the top 40 consulting engineers in America for 2010, will be the guest speaker at a special presentation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 23, at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus' corporate training center. The event is sponsored by McMillen Engineering of Uniontown, Pa., and is part of Penn State Fayette's celebration of National Engineers Week. Macauley will be talking about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This free event is an ideal opportunity for area middle and high school students and their parents to learn about and discuss careers in STEM subjects.
