Witf executive to deliver Harrisburg commencement address

Kathleen Pavelko, president and CEO of witf, will deliver Penn State Harrisburg's fall 2012 commencement address on Saturday (Dec. 22). The campus expects to confer more than 600 undergraduate and graduate degrees during the ceremony, which starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa.

Since her tenure began in October 1999 at Harrisburg-based witf, a public media center, which serves 2 million citizens in south central Pennsylvania, Pavelko has led and completed a $39 million capital project, which financed the construction of a 72,000-square-foot public media center that opened in 2007. Under Pavelko's leadership, witf's total assets have quintupled.

Penn State Harrisburg honors alumni for professional accomplishments

This year, each of Penn State Harrisburg's five academic schools presented an Alumni Achievement Award to one of their graduates who demonstrates outstanding professional accomplishment. The awards, bestowed during the Alumni Awards Dinner, held in conjunction with Homecoming on Oct. 12, honor a diverse collection of talents and accomplishments from across the college.

Luke Kempski, a 1995 master's of education in training and development graduate, received the Alumni Achievement Award from the School of Behavioral Science and Education. The School of Business Administration presented its Alumni Achievement Award to E. Philip Wenger, who holds a bachelor's degree in finance (1979) and a master of business administration (1987) from Penn State Harrisburg. Kathy Marley-Dunbar received the School of Humanities' Alumni Achievement Award. She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in American studies from Penn State Harrisburg (1989 and 1993). The School of Public Affairs recognized Richard White, a 1997 graduate of the college's doctoral program in public administration, with its Alumni Achievement Award. John Mason Jr., a 1972 Penn State Harrisburg transportation technology graduate, received the Alumni Achievement Award presented by the School of Science, Engineering and Technology.

A panel discussion examining the presidential candidates' economic policies is next up in Penn State Harrisburg's fall 2012 series "Academic Perspectives on the Election Season," which looks at important election-year topics. Scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 26 at noon in the Gallery Lounge, W-107 Olmsted Building, the panel will discuss each candidate's stance on issues such as tax policies, national debt, unemployment, financial regulation, and international trade.

The only person to have walked all 50 states - 11,208 miles - in 365 consecutive days, Sweetgall will present the healthy living workshop "Motivation to Move," Tuesday, June 19, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Penn State Harrisburg. The event is free and open to the public.
