During the recent spring break, eight Penn State Beaver students, faculty and staff traveled to Tuba City, Arizona, where they lived and worked with the Navajo Nation while a second group of students and faculty gave a presentation at an international conference in Berlin.

In July 1939, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a brilliant young Lutheran theologian and pastor, left New York almost as soon as he had arrived there, to return to the rising chaos in his native Germany. War was imminent. Bonhoeffer had already been hounded and silenced by the Nazi regime for his vocal opposition to its persecution of Jews. He had been offered safe haven by American friends, and had accepted it, only to change his mind.

When Anne Stone left for Germany, she had no idea she'd get to see the Ice Man's tattoos.

Stone, a graduate student in anthropology at Penn State, is a fledgling expert in a fledgling discipline: the study of ancient DNA. At a meeting in Europe in 1991, she met some of the field's leaders, including biologist Svante Pääbo, professor at the Institute of Zoology at the University of Munich. The following year she received a Fulbright grant, and left for a year in Pääbo's lab.

With the reunification of Germany, have come the expected disagreements: Who will lead the reunited country? Where will the capital be? How will the eastern economy be restored. But one battle is being fought within a group not expected to split—the environmentalists.
