Internship has New Kensington student laser-focused on engineering

Tyler Leatherwood is in his second year working on laser weapons at Penn State's Electro-Optics Center (EOC). He'll be working at the center for at least two more years as he helps design, test and build components for the high-powered defense systems used by the United States military. By the way, he is a full-time sophomore in the engineering program at Penn State New Kensington.

Last year, as a freshman, Leatherwood was selected as the charter member of a new campus program, GREAT (Growing Regional Engineering through Academics and Training). A collaboration of the New Kensington campus, Electro-Optics Center and industries in the region, GREAT establishes internships at local companies for engineering students. Whereas most internships are geared to juniors and seniors, GREAT interns can begin as soon as their first year in college.

Bender named educational counselor for EOC

Jill M. Bender has been appointed educational counselor with the Penn State Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC) of Southwestern Pa., a federal TRIO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Penn State Beaver hosts an office for the EOC, which assists low-income, potential first-generation adult students, age 19 or older, in gaining access to post-secondary education and training.

Prior to the appointment, Bender was a staff assistant in the Residence Life and Student Affairs offices at Beaver campus for two years, and spent five years as a teaching assistant for the Freedom Area School District. Bender holds a bachelor's degree in major elementary and special education from Slippery Rock University.

Penn State Fayette student Randy Chambliss recently was honored by the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Chambliss received the EOC Perseverance Award at the EOC's annual open house in late September.

Next generation devices get boost from Penn State research

Researchers in the Electro-Optics Center (EOC) Materials Division at Penn State have produced 100 mm diameter graphene wafers, a key milestone in the development of graphene for next generation high-power, high-frequency electronic devices including displays, solar cells, sensors and more. Thanks to the ability of an electron to move at 1/300th the speed of light through graphene (significantly faster than silicon), graphene is a candidate material for many high-speed computing applications in the multibillion-dollar semiconductor device industry, and has the potential to enable terahertz computing, at processor speeds 100 to 1,000 times faster than silicon.

When Penn State opened the Electro-Optics Center (EOC) in 1999, the University's vision was to create an entity that would foster economic development in the state and to provide research and development in areas critical to the nation's defense. Ten years later, the center has proven to be successful in meeting both of those goals and has helped in the development of some of the most sophisticated technology in use today.
