Research and Creative Exposition set for April 9

Students at Penn State New Kensington will have the opportunity to present their research in a public forum at the seventh annual Research and Creative Exposition on April 9, in the campus Athletics Center.

The exposition provides students, under the guidance of a faculty adviser, with the opportunity to choose a topic, conduct research, draw conclusions and present their information in a public setting. A concurrent job fair in the Athletics Center also gives visitors the chance to speak with potential employers from the region.

The competition is divided into two categories: posters and oral presentations. The poster category is designed to convey the project's significance to scholars in the field and potential significance to the general public. The student's written research is translated into a poster. Participants are judged on content, display and oral defense of their project.

Visit to federal courthouse prepares students for career choices

Penn State New Kensington student Andrew Holodnik's major is preparing him for a career with the U.S. Marshals Service. Recently, an instructor for one of his courses provided an opportunity for Holodnik to talk with federal marshals and gain first-hand knowledge of the day-to-day activities of the service.

Judge Samuel Goldstrohm, magisterial district judge for Armstrong County and adjunct instructor in administration of justice at the campus, accompanied 25 campus students in his criminal justice class to U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh. Judges and staff of the court, which serves the western district of Pennsylvania, held a series of panel discussions that described the inner-workings of the court system.

Entrepreneur panel discussion set for Dec. 11

Budding entrepreneurs can get insights on owning or expanding a business at a forum set for 6 p.m., Tuesday (Dec. 11), in the Conference Center at Penn State New Kensington.

The Entrepreneur Forum features a panel of local businessmen -- Brian Jacobs, president of Westarm Therapy in Lower Burrell; William Kabazie, president of ALKAB Contract Manufacturing Inc. in New Kensington; and Neil Andritz, president of Rivers Edge in Leechburg -- who will share ideas on building a business and utilizing the appropriate resources. Douglas Rosensteel, president of BHD Technologies Inc. in Greensburg, will moderate the discussion. Other topics will include marketing techniques and challenges for startup companies.

High school students attended annual Communications Day

On Tuesday, April 3, more than 130 students from six area high schools attended Penn State Beaver's seventh annual Communications Day, which featured a theme of "A World Away. A Message Apart." The event was designed, organized and implemented by students in the Introduction to Public Relations and the Public Relations Methods courses taught by Juliette Storr, associate professor of communications.

Research and Creative Exposition, Career Day

From the perception of people with tattoos to assessing the value of a liberal arts education to the viability of nuclear energy, students at Penn State New Kensington explored a variety of issues during the fall and spring semesters. The results of their research will be unveiled publicly at the 10th annual Research and Creative Exposition from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the campus Athletics Center.

Career Week activities set April 2-5 at Penn State York

Penn State York students will have the opportunity to network with business professionals in a variety of career fields during a networking event on Thursday, April 5 as part of a week-long series of events to help students connect with alumni and learn about careers through networking. The networking event begins at noon in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building.

Public invited to learn about careers with Homeland Security agencies

The public is invited to attend a free information session about available careers with Homeland Security agencies, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, in the Lodge of the Penn State Beaver Student Union Building. The program is sponsored by the Beaver campus Office of Continuing Education. Employment opportunities open in a variety of agencies will be presented, including the Transportation Security Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Citizenship Immigration Service, Customs and Border Protection, and the United States Coast Guard. Penn State's Smeal College of Business again No. 1 among recruiters

For the second year in a row, employers surveyed by Bloomberg Businessweek have ranked the Penn State Smeal College of Business as having the best undergraduate business program in the country. The magazine surveyed 257 corporate recruiters as part of its 2012 ranking of the best undergraduate business programs. The recruiters were asked to identify which schools have the best graduates, most innovative curricula, and most effective career services. Smeal's overall ranking this year rose three spots to 22nd out of the 142 programs eligible for the ranking.

Expo highlights student research and career opportunities

Students at Penn State New Kensington will present their research in a public forum at the tenth annual Research and Creative Exposition on Tuesday, April 17, and Thursday, April 19, in the campus Athletics Center. Also, in conjunction with the expo, the campus hosts the fourth annual Career Day from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. during the Tuesday portion of the two-day event. The exposition provides students, under the guidance of a faculty adviser, with the opportunity to conduct research, draw conclusions and present their information in a public setting. Last year, 62 students researched projects that were exhibited in a poster format or delivered orally. Career Day complements the Expo by creating new opportunities for the students and faculty to build stronger contacts with local industries through sharing of career information while also highlighting the campus' many research and creative activities. Students and graduates can learn about career paths in their majors, and make connections for internship and job opportunities. The event is open to current Penn State students and recent graduates and admission is free.

The Office of Career and Corporate Connections at the Penn State Smeal College of Business has deemed October to be Careers that Make a Difference Month and is working with local and national organizations to highlight career options with nonprofits and other ways to leverage one's career for the greater good. Sponsored by the Smeal student group Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations, the monthlong celebration of careers that make a difference culminates on Oct. 25 with a nonprofit career fair in the Business Building Atrium. Program encourages girls to explore STEM careers

Bethany Snyder of Thomasville, Pa., was just 13-years-old when she attended Pathways to Your Future: Exploring STEM Careers, a program to encourage young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at Penn State York in 2003. No one is more surprised than she is that at age 20 and a science major at Penn State York, she will be helping to present one of the workshops when the 15th annual program takes place at 8:45 a.m. Friday, May 6, in the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center at the campus. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

"When I was in seventh grade myself I participated in this program; it is so nice to see it go full circle for me." Snyder was selected to attend the program back then as one of attendees from Dover Middle School. "I was naturally good at science and that's why I was one of the girls selected to attend. I wasn't always interested in science but the program was exciting and I remember feeling very special to be on a college campus for a day when I was in seventh grade."

Students will host sixth annual Communications Day

Penn State Beaver junior and senior communications students will host the sixth annual Communications Day from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, March 24. Programs will be held in the Student Union Building and the Michael Baker Building on campus. Beaver hosts the event for local high school students to introduce them to potential career paths in television, radio, print journalism, special event planning, social media, public relations and marketing. Smeal No. 1 among recruiters, Bloomberg Businessweek finds

The Penn State Smeal College of Business ranks No. 1 among all undergraduate business programs, according to recruiters surveyed by Bloomberg Businessweek for its annual ranking of the country's best undergraduate business programs. The magazine surveyed 246 recruiters, asking them to identify the programs with the best graduates, most innovative curriculum, and most effective career services. In addition to the recruiter survey, the rankings are based on student surveys and information provided by the schools. Overall, Smeal ranked 25th. The college ranked ninth among publicly supported programs.

Middletown students visit the College of Medicine

Twenty-one Middletown Area High School Students of the Health and Science Careers Pathway spent the day at Penn State College of Medicine performing experiments and learning about science-related careers as part of Shadowing Day. The event dovetailed with a program supported by the NIH Science Education Partnership Award of Judith Bond, a program that has hosted Middletown students during the summer for the past two years. The grant is focused on exposing students to science and encouraging them to consider careers in health fields.
