Penn State Beaver faculty members publish books

Two Penn State Beaver faculty members have had books published recently. Kevin Bennett, senior instructor in psychology, is the author of "Jealousy's Design: Maladaptive Trait or Psychological Solution?" published by LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing. JoAnn Chirico, senior instructor in sociology, is the author of "Globalization: Prospects and Problems" published by SAGE Publications, Inc.

'The Kite Runner' kicks off Global Film Series on campus

The public is invited to attend a free screening of "The Kite Runner," 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the auditorium of the Penn State Beaver Student Union Building. An open discussion with the audience will follow the film. The award-winning film from 2007 is based on author Khaled Hosseini's debut novel of the same name. The book and film tell the story of Amir, a young boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who befriends Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.

New book explores humankind's 'animal connection'

"The Animal Connection," a new book by Pat Shipman, a Penn State paleoanthropologist, presents the groundbreaking new idea that humans' connection to other animal species may be the driving force behind the last 2.6 million years of human evolution. Reviewers have hailed the book, calling it "a work of extraordinarily broad scholarship" and saying that "animal lovers and readers who are interested in human psychology will not be able to put this fascinating book down." Shipman elegantly synthesizes decades of paleontology, anthropology, and evolutionary theory through the new lens of the animal connection, creating a compelling view of human development. "Animals were not incidental to our evolution into Homo sapiens; they were essential to it -- they are what made us human."

Niles co-edits book on professional counseling

A newly released book co-authored by Spencer G. Niles, Penn State professor of counselor education, provides a comprehensive introduction to the counseling profession. Niles worked with Sylvia Nassar-McMillan of North Carolina State University to co-edit "Developing Your Identity as a Professional Counselor: Standards, Settings, and Specialties."

'Extension Memories' book available from College of Ag Sciences

More than 100 years of history of Cooperative Extension in Pennsylvania -- as recalled in stories by 100 retired and current extension agents, educators and administrators -- is covered in a new book, "Extension Memories of the 20th Century," available from Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences.
