Libraries’ Dewey joins NIH advisory committee

Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications, Penn State, has accepted a four-year appointment to the PubMed Central (PMC) National Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As a committee member, Dewey will advise the NIH on the content and operation of the PubMed Central repository and help to establish criteria: to certify groups submitting materials to the system, to monitor the operation of the system, and to ensure that PMC evolves and remains responsive to the needs of researchers, publishers, librarians and the general public.

Dewey noted, “PMC is among the many databases offered at Penn State’s University Libraries, and it is especially exciting to serve on the advisory committee of this archive that gives free online access to approximately 3 million full-text articles from biomedical and life sciences journal literature.”

Launched in 2000, to meet the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) legislative mandate to preserve biomedical literature, PMC, is the digital counterpart of NLM’s extensive print journal collection. It can be accessed through the Libraries Database by Title (A–Z) and through the Alumni Library under the Health tab.
