Penn State DuBois finishes third at NCWA-MEC National Wrestling Qualifier

Penn State DuBois wrestlers put together another good weekend on the mats at the NCWA Mid-East Conference qualifying tournament hosted at Penn College on Saturday, March 2. Coach Matt Park will send 11 Penn State DuBois wrestlers on to compete in the NCWA National Tournament, March 13-15, in Allen, Texas at the Allen Event Center.

Leading the way for DuBois was junior Logan Shirey who won title at 184 pounds. Logan was 3-0 with two pins and a tough 4-3 win in the finals over Alec Warner of Penn State Mont Alto. Finishing second were Austin Sheibley at 133 pounds, and Ryan Terwilliger at 174 pounds; Sheibley dropped the decision by the score of 4-1 to Jimmy Hughes of Penn State Mont Alto and Terwilliger lost 9-7 in overtime to Alex Amador of Lafayette College.

Other place winners for DuBois were fourth place, Brett Himes (125 pounds), Tim Suydan (235), and Andrew Bigley (285). Fifth place Matt Rivera (174), Seventh place Jake Himes (157) and Nate Rodgers (197). Receiving conference wild card selections were Joe Knarr (165) and Michael Bonner (141).

The team title was won by University of Maryland-Baltimore County with 137 points, Mont Alto 129 points, DuBois 106 points, West Chester University 104 points, and Pitt 93 pounts, round out the top five teams.

The Penn State DuBois wrestlers will compete on March 13 in the NCWA National Championships in Allen, Texas with the first round of wrestling starting at 10 a.m. with a 42-man bracket. Finals are slated for 3 p.m. March 15 followed by an All-American banquet at 7 p.m. Last year, Coach Park and assistant Josh Knapp had two wrestlers achieve All-American honors in Kasey Haines and Cliff Hill.
