Veterans Week Programs to be held at Penn State Berks

In honor of National Veterans Week, Penn State Berks will host two events: a Veterans Recognition Program beginning at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the Lion’s Den of the Perkins Student Center; and a Veterans Discussion Panel beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium.

All members of the Penn State Berks campus community are welcome. Seating is limited for the Veterans Day Recognition Program and you must reserve your seat by sending an email to no later than Friday, Nov. 1.

The program will begin with the Choir Club singing the National Anthem. Speakers at the event will include Jim Laurie, instructor in business, who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1969–1973; Sharron Wagner and her son Steve Wagner, local publishers, authors, and World War II historians; Richard Biehl, Wyomissing, Pa., a U.S. Army D-Day survivor who served with the 1st Infantry Division; and Calvin Summers, Reading, Pa., who served with the 5th Army Express in North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific. The program will be followed by a luncheon.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Penn State Berks also will host a Veterans Discussion Panel titled “Boots to Books: The Transition from Military Life to College Life” to honor our veterans and enlisted individuals, to acknowledge their sacrifices, and to discuss the challenges student veterans face when they return to school after service.

Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk will provide the opening remarks. Student, faculty and staff veterans will discuss their experiences in the military and their transition to civilian life as college students. All members of the Penn State Berks community are encouraged to attend.
