Altoona campus, Health & Wellness Center recognized for mental health offerings

Penn State Altoona and its Health & Wellness Center have been awarded the JedCampus seal for exhibiting comprehensive mental health promotion and suicide prevention programming. This recognition shows Penn State Altoona’s commitment to providing resources which are in line with the Jed Foundation’s recommended practices and strategies in mental health programming.

The Jed Foundation is the nation's leading organization in the work of protecting the emotional health of America's 20 million college students. Its mission is to promote emotional health and prevent suicide among college and university students. To achieve this, the organization collaborates with the public and leaders in higher education, mental health, and research to produce and advance mental health initiatives.

JedCampus offers an online assessment and interactive feedback process in which colleges can elect to submit a comprehensive report on their processes and strategies specific to the prevention of suicide on their campus. Colleges are encouraged to promote a continuum of mental health resources including public health screening models and gate-keeper training as a part of a comprehensive system of care.

To date, Penn State Altoona has trained the majority of its faculty, staff and students on how to recognize, approach and refer students in distress.
