Smeal College of Business community to sign honor code

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Smeal College of Business community will have an opportunity to sign the Smeal honor code throughout the second week of classes. Signing sessions will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 3 to 6 in the Atrium of the Business Building on the University Park campus.

There will be an additional opportunity to sign the code at the Smeal Student Organization Involvement Fair from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the Business Building Atrium.

“Signing the honor code sends a simple but powerful message about what it means to be a part of the Smeal community,” said Charles Whiteman, John and Becky Surma Dean of Smeal. “Whether you’re a new or returning member of the community, we hope you’ll signal your commitment to honor and integrity by signing the code this fall.”

The All Deans’ signing will take place at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the Business Building Atrium.

Signing the honor code is a tradition at Smeal observed at the beginning of each fall and spring semester, and it is the foundation of an academic integrity initiative at the college. This initiative traces its roots to 2006 when members of the Smeal community began working together to establish a code and related processes.

Students are asked to sign the honor code on the second week of the semester after learning about Smeal’s commitment to honor and integrity throughout the first week of their classes.

The code reads: “We, the Smeal College of Business community, aspire to the highest ethical standards and will hold each other accountable to them. We will not engage in any action that is improper or that creates the appearance of impropriety in our academic lives, and we intend to hold to this standard in our future careers.”
