No. 15 Penn State wrestlers fall at Michigan State, 19-12

East Lansing, MIch. -- The No. 15 ranked Penn State wrestling team had a tough end to a two-match road trip to Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 15) as the Nittany Lions dropped their second match on the weekend with a 19-12 decision to Michigan State. Penn State, which won four of 10 bouts, fell to 4-4 on the year and 0-2 in the Big Ten.

Michigan State, which lost 28-9 to No. 1 Oklahoma State on Thursday, improved to 3-2, 1-0 in the Big Ten

The dual started with a highly anticipated match-up at 184 pounds between No. 6 Eric Bradley and No. 18 Joe Williams. The first two periods were very defense-oriented, with the difference in the match being a Bradley escape in the second period after choosing the down position. In the third, Williams scored an escape point early, but was quickly taken down by Bradley and wrestled the rest of the match from behind. The defending Big Ten champion claimed a 5-2 decision, and gave the Nittany Lions an early 3-0 lead.

At 197 pounds, Michigan State's Jeff Clemens was shutout by Penn State's Joel Edwards, 5-0. Edwards scored a takedown in each of the first two periods, and controlled Clemens for the majority of the match.

The heavyweight match was an exciting, physically grueling match that saw Michigan State's Max Lossen, win the first dual meet match of his career, 4-3, over sophomore C.J. Wonsettler. Trailing by two points in the final minute, Lossen scored an escape and a takedown, then held Wonsettler down for the final eight seconds of the period. The victory put the Spartans on the board, cutting Penn State's lead in the meet to 6-3.

At 125, No. 15 Adam Smith dropped his first dual meet of the season as No. 3 Nick Simmons remained undefeated, posting a major decision win, 8-0. Spartan All-American notched a takedown in each period, as well as an escape in the second and riding time. Smith dropped to 7-1 in dual meet action, 12-5 on the year.

Penn State reclaimed the lead, 9-7, after the 133-pound match between a pair of redshirt freshmen. Penn State's Bryan Heller downed Ryan Froese, 9-2.

At 141, No. 3 Andy Simmons downed No. 18 DeWitt Driscoll, 5-0. Simmons scored an early takedown in the first period, and added another in the third period. The win put MSU back in front for the meet, 10-9, with four matches remaining.

Michigan State extended its lead to 13-9 behind the wrestling of No. 17 Darren McKnight at 149 pounds. McKnight scored a total of six takedowns, and added a point for riding time in a 13-7 victory over Jack Decker.

At 157, No. 9 Nathan Galloway held on as Spartan Matt McCarty made a late run scoring three points in the final seconds to tie the match score on the board at 6-6. Riding time proved to be the difference as Galloway took the decision, 7-6, and improved to 22-4 on the year, 4-2 in dual meet action.

At 165, Spartan freshman Bryan Harney defeated Steve Troup, 9-6. Harney notched a takedown in each of the first two periods, then two more in the third for the win and a 16-12 MSU lead.

The meet came down to the final match of the evening at 174 pounds, where R.J. Boudro held on to defeat Penn State's James Yonushonis, 6-5 in a close battle that sealed the Spartan victory.
