Take Back the Night March scheduled for April 16

University Park, Pa. -- The Center for Women Students is collaborating with students from Penn State Men Against Violence and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance to sponsor the 22nd annual Take Back the Night March April 16, beginning with a rally on the steps of Old Main at 6 p.m.  Following the rally, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the march will begin and proceed through campus and then downtown, with a closing at the Central Parklet. Support counselors from the Centre County Women's Resource Center will be available throughout the event.

The Take Back the Night event provides a public forum to raise awareness, through educational speakers and professionals who speak about the issue of sexual violence at the rally and survivors who talk about their experiences on the march. The march also offers a healing opportunity for a survivor who chooses to speak in a supportive community environment -- sometimes for the first time.

The Take Back the Night event is held worldwide and began in Germany in 1973. The event was first held at Penn State in 1986 and has been held annually since that time. Take Back the Night is only one of the programs held in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month in April.
