Field hockey, women's soccer claim Big Ten regular season titles

University Park, Pa. — The ninth-ranked Penn State field hockey team won its fifth Big Ten regular season title — and first since 2005 — as the Nittany Lions defeated Michigan, 3-0, in a home match Sunday (Oct. 26). The No. 21 women's soccer team, meanwhile, upended Purdue 2-0 on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind., to secure at least a share of the regular season crown for the 11th consecutive year.

For the Nittany Lion field hockey team, Jen Beaumont (Chalfont, Pa.) made nine saves in goal for her sixth and the team's ninth shutout of the season. Allison Scola (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Daneen Zug (Manheim, Pa.) each supplied three points — one goal and one assist — in the victory over the Wolverines. For the women's soccer team, the win guarantees Penn State at least a share of the Big Ten Championship as the strength of the dynasty continues for the 11th straight year. The Nittany Lions are now second all-time in consecutive Big Ten Championships behind Michigan women's swimming and diving with 12. Scoring in the championship performance were Nikki Watts (Hungerford, England) and Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.). For more on the women's soccer victory, visit http://live.psu.edu/story/35575
