College of Ag Sciences students receive internship awards

University Park, Pa. -- Nine Penn State students have been selected as College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society 2009 Internship Award winners. The award, which includes a $750 stipend, was established to encourage students to enroll in internship courses offered within the College of Agricultural Sciences

"The Alumni Society recognizes the importance of on-the-job learning experiences to prepare undergraduates for today's competitive job market," said Naomi Knaub, the college's director of alumni relations. "By working as interns, students can establish networks of professional contacts and discover what areas of specialization appeal to them."

Internship Award winners are chosen on the basis of an internship plan, a final report on the internship, an employer evaluation and a letter of recommendation from the internship course supervisor. The winners are

-- Emily Caldwell, daughter of Ron and Vicky Caldwell of Beaver Falls, Pa. An agribusiness management major, Caldwell was an intern with Progressive Dairy Publishing in Jerome, Idaho. She is a graduate of Riverside High School.

-- Janelle Hartzell, daughter of George and Kathy Hartzell of Slippery Rock, Pa. An animal sciences major, Janelle was an intern at AgChoice Farm Credit in Lewisburg, Pa. She is a graduate of Slippery Rock High School.

-- Amy Miller, daughter of Richard and Diane Miller of Hollsopple, Pa. An animal sciences major, Miller was an intern with the Golden Oaks Farm in Wauconda, Ill. She is a graduate of Conemaugh Township Area High School.

-- Briana Mott, daughter of Lorraine Mott of Manlius, N.Y. An animal sciences major, Mott was an intern with the Coolmore America/Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky. She is a graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School.

-- Kelly Over, daughter of Cathy Over and the late Glen Over of Williamsburg, Pa. An agribusiness management major, Over was an intern with the Penn State Office of Pesticide Education. She is a graduate of Williamsburg High School.

-- Rachel Owens, daughter of Rob and Joanne Owens of Harrison City, Pa. An agricultural science major, Owens was an intern with Wiscoy Pet Supply Co. in State College, Pa. She is a graduate of Penn Trafford High School.

-- Tyler Rice, son of Gerald and Sharon Rice of Mount Pleasant Mills, Pa. An agricultural science major, Rice was an intern with The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore, Okla. He is a graduate of Midd-West High School.

-- Johanna Rohrer, daughter of Dudley and Beth Rohrer of Manheim, Pa. An agricultural science major, Rohrer was an intern with the Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville, N.Y. She is a graduate of Manheim Central High School.

-- Andrea Schulz, daughter of Howard and Jamie Schulz of Ewing, N.J. An agribusiness management major, Schulz was an intern with Kraft Foods in Richmond, Va. She is a graduate of Southern Hunterdon Regional High School.
