Health Shorts: Preventing cancer and recurrence

The risk of colon cancer does not end even after a patient has successfully been treated for it. To keep your colon healthy and prevent cancer recurrence:

  • Exercise regularly; it will cut your risk of recurrence by 40 to 50 percent.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Replace red meat, processed meat and sweets in your diet with fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry and whole grains.
  • Increase your intake of both calcium and vitamin D.
  • Continue getting regular checkups and screening tests.
