Penn College's social networking foothold expands to Twitter

Supplementing its inroads into the online worlds of Facebook and YouTube, Pennsylvania College of Technology recently established a presence on the Twitter social networking website.

Twitter, a popular mechanism for sharing brief items -- called “Tweets” -- among interconnected users and followers, was the next logical initiative for the college’s Social Networking Task Force. Up-to-the-minute news and information from Penn College can be found at

While still small in comparison -- an estimated 30 million followers to Facebook’s 500 million friends -- Twitter has the edge in real-time communication, with short bursts of information limited to 140 characters each.

“I think it’s safe to say that Twitter is intended as a more immediate means of communication,” said Jim Cunningham, vice president for information technology and business process improvement, “and we’ll be exploring ways to use that aspect of it.”

Emergency alerts from Penn College Police, scoring updates of athletic events in progress, and time-sensitive sales announcements from Dining Services and The College Store are among those possibilities.
