Engineering science junior named Goldwater Scholar

Sylvia Ranjeva, a junior majoring in engineering science, has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program scholar for the 2011-12 academic year.

Ranjeva is one of three Penn State students to receive the scholarship. They are among 275 total scholars, selected from a pool of 1,095 applicants handled through the University Fellowships Office.

The Goldwater Foundation, a federally endowed agency that honors Senator Barry M. Goldwater, encourages outstanding students and aspiring researchers to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.

The scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books and room and board -- up to $7,500 annually.

Ranjeva plans to receive her doctor of medicine or doctoral degree in infectious disease and biomedical engineering. Her ultimate goal is to conduct research as a physician scientist.
