George Apostolakis, commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), will speak at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in 112 Walker Building.
The talk, "Managing Uncertainties in the Regulation and Licensing of Nuclear Facilities," will review the evolution of regulation and licensing in reactor development. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Lawrence E. Hochreiter Distinguished Lecture Series, created in memory of Hochreiter, late professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering at Penn State.
Apostolakis was sworn in as commissioner of the NRC on April 23, 2010. Before joining the NRC, he was the Korea Electric Power Corporation professor of nuclear science and engineering and a professor of engineering systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds a doctorate in engineering science from the California Institute of Technology.
