Three special, belated Mother's Day gifts: diplomas for sons and Mom

Denise, Nathan and Tyler Malovich started at different times at Penn State Shenango, but all will receive bachelor’s degrees on May 13

Denise Malovich is one of more than 12,500 Penn State students University-wide graduating this spring, but she never imagined she would be joining her two sons, Nathan and Tyler, in picking up diplomas at Penn State Shenango. They began their bachelor's degree studies at the campus at different times, but all will graduate on May 13.

"I'm thrilled to be graduating," said Denise, 50, of Sharpsville, Pa. "I always wanted to go back and get a business degree."

"I didn’t really think when I graduated from high school that I would be graduating with my brother and Mom," said Nathan, 22. "It's a good thing."

Tyler, 24. agreed. "I'm happy for all of us to graduate at the same time," he said.

The three Malovichs will be among the 70 students graduating at Shenango campus, which includes four students from other Penn State campuses. Denise returned there in 2008 for a B.S. degree in business 25 years after earning an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology. Tyler enrolled at the campus in 2005; then transferred to Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, to complete a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, with a minor in operations and supply chain management. Nathan enrolled at the campus in 2007 and completed his bachelor's degree in information sciences and technology at University Park campus.

Denise's academic adviser Joy Perrine, instructor of business administration and coordinator of the business programs, calls her "an excellent student who is dynamic and always goes above and beyond in her class work."

While a student, Denise has worked full time since 1995 with Wilton, a leading food crafting company involved in baking, cake decorating, candy making, cookie making and other products. Denise is senior class marketing supervisor for 178 teachers at 152 Jo-Ann's Superstores in the Eastern United States. She also served as president of the campus Women's Commission and is a member of the Penn State Shenango Valley Alumni Board and Blue and White Society. She organized campus and community events and fundraisers. She was chosen the campus' 2011 Dennis W. Bartholomew Outstanding Adult Student.
