Chemical engineering's Rioux wins DARPA award

Robert Rioux Jr., assistant professor of chemical engineering at Penn State, was one of 39 winners of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) 2011 Young Faculty Awards (YFA).

The YFA program is designed to identify outstanding junior faculty members and expose them to the U.S. Department of Defense, its needs and DARPA's program development process.

The YFA program, which received 407 applicants, will award $11.7 million in grants this year. Grants average approximately $300,000 per recipient.

Rioux's project is titled "Lignin Depolymerization by Surface Organocatalysts in Ionic Liquids."
