Penn State EcoCAR2 team to unveil newest vehicle March 28

After months of designing and simulating hybrid concept designs, the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team (PSU AVT) will host an event to publicly reveal its final vehicle architecture for the three years of the national competition known as EcoCAR2: Plugging In to the Future.

The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, outside the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute on University Drive and Hastings Road on the University Park campus of Penn State. Penn State community members and the general public are invited to stop by and learn about the vehicle architecture, as well as meet the dedicated team of students that designed it.

The PSU AVT has been competing in advanced vehicle technology competitions since 1988. EcoCAR 2 is North American collegiate competition sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy. Student engineers must redesign and reengineer a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu into a unique hybrid that increases gas mileage, decreases emissions and maintains consumer acceptability. PSU AVT is currently in Year One of the competition, during which the team designed three vehicle architectures concepts and then chose the best to implement in the Malibu. The final competition for Year One will take place in late May in Los Angeles.

The team has been anxiously awaiting the chance to publicly reveal the architecture they've chosen. "It's different from the ideas we've used in the past, and we're looking forward to finally telling the community about it," co-team leader Luke Shepley said. "It's very practical, and I think the public will be excited to see where the vehicle technology of the future is heading."

Clean Cities Pittsburgh Executive Director Rick Price will bring a Chevrolet Volt, which will be featured alongside with other Penn State student engineering projects relating to vehicles, sustainability and technology. He will address attendees at 1 p.m. about the Clean Cities and PSU AVT partnership.

Refreshments will be available for guests. Guests will also have an opportunity to participate in a guided scavenger hunt for chances to win prizes.
