Student solutions to industry problems to be showcased April 26

Students from the College of Engineering will display their capstone design projects at the Student Design Project Showcase from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

In addition, members of the Penn State racing team will be on hand to unveil their Formula vehicle at 12:30 p.m. before the start of the showcase.

The showcase will feature industry-sponsored projects from students in senior student capstone design courses in aerospace engineering; agricultural and biological engineering; bioengineering; chemical engineering; computer science and engineering; electrical engineering; engineering design; engineering science and mechanics; energy engineering; industrial and manufacturing engineering; material science and engineering; and mechanical and nuclear engineering.

The semester-long projects merge the classroom and real-world by exposing students to the technical demands, pitfalls and professional expectations they would experience as a practicing engineer in the industry.

During the showcase, the student projects will be judged by a panel of industry experts and prizes will be awarded to groups with the best projects and best posters. The cash prizes are sponsored by Boeing, BP, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Awards will be presented at the Industry Partners' Dinner and Award Ceremony following the showcase.

Companies sponsoring this semester's projects include 4Carrots; Afterglow Solutions; Air Products and Chemicals; Akron Brass Company; APPEK; American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Bell Helicopter; BP; Buzby Networks; Central PA SCI Support Group; Consol Energy; Delphi Display Systems; Dresser-Rand; Experimental Designs, Inc.; Flowserve; Geisinger Urology; Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company; Harris Corporation; Hickman; Williams & Company; IM ABLE Foundation; Innovative Scientific Solutions, Inc.; Jersey Shore Hospital; KCF Technologies; Kinetic Revolutions; Kydex, LLC; Latrobe Specialty Steel; Life Technologies; Lockheed Martin; Lydia Swatsworth's Care Team; M4 Sciences; Muncy Valley Hospital; NASA; NAVAIR Lakehurst; NSWCCD; NutrAfrica; Quaker Chemical Corporation; QuipCo; Rockland Manufacturing; Shell; Solar Dynamic Technology; Solutionwerks; Speeco; SPS Technologies; The Boeing Company; The Home Depot; The Net Return; The Quick Trainer; The Timken Company; The Vitamin Shoppe; Tyco Fire Protection Products; Tyco Retail Solutions; Videon Central Inc.; Volvo Powertrain; and Xerox.

In addition to the senior capstone projects, students from the classes Engineering Design 100 and 130 will display their final projects at the event.

The Student Design Project Showcase is organized by the Learning Factory, a university-industry partnership to educate the next generation of engineers by providing hands-on experience with real-world capstone design projects. The Learning Factory has facilitated more than 2,500 student design projects for more than 350 companies since its establishment in 1995.
