Young chestnuts after inoculation

Each generation of crossbred and transgenic chestnuts is inoculated with the chestnut blight to determine which young trees are resistant. In experiments at State University of New York, Syracuse, the young trees on the left had no resistance and are dying a few weeks after innoculation. The transgenic chestnuts in the middle, or B row, expressing the oxalate oxidase transgene, show no signs of wilting.
