An important advance in understanding how clusters of stars like our sun are formed has been made by a team that includes seven Penn State astronomers. One of the clusters that the astronomers studied is shown in this image. This cluster is in the center of the Flame Nebula, which is about 1,4000 light years from Earth. X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory are seen in this composite image as purple, while infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope are colored red, green and blue.
