POTD 10 10 12 Armillary Sphere

Penn State students walked by the Armillary Sphere outside Old Main on the University Park campus as they made their way to and from classes on the morning of Oct. 10. The Armillary Sphere, a gift from the class of 1966, is mounted on the back of a turtle, a depiction of the Greek myth that describes how Atlas would rest the world on the back of a turtle when he needed to rest. Armillary Spheres were used as early as the third century to determine the positions of celestial bodies in relation to the Earth.
