University planners and arborists look forward as elm population dwindles

The office of Physical Plant along with a host of other university groups have fought the good fight, but it seems that there is no getting around the fact that the University Park campus will see a large reduction in the elm population. Landscape architects and grounds crews have taken a dark situation and have turned it into a grand opportunity. Just as officials made decisions one hundred years ago when they planted one of the largest elm tree stands in the eastern United States, one hundred years later another generation of planners will be making the same decision. Only this time biodiversity will be a key player in the hopes of maintaining campus trees for generations to come.
