ESPN’s Buccigross to participate in virtual 'Conversation' with students

March 23, 2020

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — John Buccigross, the popular “SportsCenter” anchor and college hockey broadcaster, will participate a virtual conversation with Penn State students at 7 p.m. March 24 in a webinar sponsored by the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State.

Buccigross will appear in the hour-long session with John Affleck, the Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society and director of the Curley Center. The event is part of the Curley Center’s ongoing Conversation Series that features some of the biggest names in sports and sports media discussing timely matters of interest.

Students may access the webinar via Zoom.

Affleck will moderate the session and ask some initial questions, as he does during the Curley Center’s traditional on-campus Conversation Series events. And, like those sessions, there will be ample time for student questions.

“While the COVID-19 virus has forced us to move courses online, we wanted to continue to the long Curley Center tradition of public conversations with major figures in sports media,” Affleck said. “We’re very grateful John agreed to join us. His long-standing interest in hockey and Frozen Four experiences make him a perfect guest for all the students and fans in Hockey Valley.”

Buccigross joined the company as an ESPNEWS anchor in 1996, prior to the launch of the 24-hour sports news network.  He was the primary host of "NHL 2Night," ESPN2’s 30-minute program dedicated to hockey highlights and news from 1998-2004. He currently serves as the play-by-play voice of the NCAA Hockey Championship (Frozen Four).

Buccigross is from Pittsburgh and earned his bachelor’s degree from Heidelberg University.

This is the first of a couple of planned additions to the Conversation Series this semester. Additional sessions will be announced in the near future.
