What's happening at Penn State? Here's a look at some of the cultural events taking place at the University this weekend and next week:
Performances
Jason Aldean — 7:30 p.m., Sept. 21, Bryce Jordan Center, University Park campus. Country music star Jason Aldean returns to Penn State with his "Ride All Night" tour.
Maceo Parker — 7:30 p.m., Sept. 26, Eisenhower Auditorium, University Park campus. Saxophonist Maceo Parker, a soul and funk pioneer, will perform.
Events
12th annual Postdoc Research Exhibition — 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Sept. 18, HUB-Robeson Center, University Park campus. Postdoctoral researchers and assistant research professors from across campus will present their work. Free.
2019 Campus Showcase — 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 19, Pattee Mall, University Park campus. The Lion Ambassadors will host "Pattee Palooza!" with student organizations' information booths, carnival games and food. Free.
Gala in the Gardens — 5:30 p.m., Sept. 20, the Arboretum at Penn State, University Park campus. The arboretum will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of its H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens. The event will include dinner and music provided by Eastern Standards.
"Sesame Street: 50 Years and Counting" — 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sept. 21, WPSU Studio, 100 Innovation Blvd., State College. WPSU Penn State celebrates the 50th anniversary of the "Sesame Street" television show with educational activities, games and crafts for children, a touch-a-truck area, selfie stations and prizes. Free.
"Elephant Path/Njaia Njoku" — 6:30 p.m., Sept. 25, Freeman Auditorium, HUB-Robeson Center, University Park campus. Directed by sculptor and filmmaker Todd McGrain, the film examines the state of the African forest elephant and the combination of political unrest, regional poverty and poaching that threatens the existence of the shrinking elephant animal population. Lectures
"Women's Rights and the Post-Civil War World" — Sept. 20-21, University Park campus. A public talk and workshop will mark the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women's suffrage in the United States. Free.
Robert M. Pockrass Memorial Lecture: "Online Experiences of Marginalized Individuals" — 5:30 p.m., Sept. 23, Foster Auditorium, Paterno Library, University Park campus. Jesse Fox, a researcher at Ohio State who studies communication, relationships and technology will discuss how the internet has helped and hindered marginalized audiences. Free.
Penn State Forum: Molly Melching — 11:30 a.m., Sept. 25, Nittany Lion Inn, University Park campus. Molly Melching, founder and creative director of Tostan, will present "The Hidden Heart of Human Rights Transformation."
Exhibits
J.D. Title — Through Sept. 27, art gallery, Penn State New Kensington. The Mercer County artist brings his watercolors to display on campus. Free.
Three Artist Exhibition — Through Oct. 10, Freyberger Gallery, Penn State Berks. Three Berks area artists — Erika Stearly, Mike Miller and Delores Kershner, will be featured. Free.
"A Meditation on this Age of Struggle and Strife" — Through Nov. 10, Art Alley, HUB-Robeson Center, University Park campus. A solo exhibit of drawings and sculptures by Art Rudy Shepherd, associate professor of art, that reflects on news from 2017 to current day. Free.
"Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman" — Through Dec. 8, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park campus. Nearly 80 objects, including sculptures, paintings, works on paper, and archival material highlight this reassessment of Harlem Renaissance artist Augusta Savage. Free.
"Bauhaus Transfers: Albers/Rauschenberg" — Through Dec. 15, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park campus. The museum celebrates the centenary of the Bauhaus, the influential school founded in Weimer, Germany, that unifies fine arts, design and architecture in its curriculum. Free.
"The Web of Life: John Biggers and the Power of Pedagogy" — Through Dec. 15, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park campus. The exhibit spotlights the work of artist John Biggers in relation to two important mentors, artist Charles White and famed art educator Viktor Lowenfeld. Free.
