Brandywine athletics week in review: Oct. 2-8

MEDIA, Pa. — Penn State Brandywine’s fall teams continue to dominate the Penn State University Athletic Conference, as each of the Lions’ three team sports remains undefeated against conference foes as the end of the regular season nears.

Brandywine women’s soccer clinched a spot in the PSUAC championship game on Nov. 1 following its 2-0 victory over Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The Lions are now 7-0-1 overall and 4-0 in league play this fall. The top two seeds will head straight to University Park for the championship match, a slight alteration in format from previous seasons.

The Lions have three regular season matches remaining, two against PSUAC foes and a non-league contest at Misericordia to end the year. Brandywine hosts Penn State Schuylkill on Monday, Oct. 9, and Penn State Beaver this Saturday, Oct. 14. The team has combined to outscore league opponents 91-8 over the last two seasons in winning 16-straight conference matches.

The Brandywine women’s soccer team also enters the week riding a seven-game win streak as do its counterparts on the men’s side, who made easy work of two of the top teams in the league last week.

Brandywine bested Penn State Hazleton 5-1 and handed Penn State Greater Allegheny its first conference loss by a 7-0 score on Saturday, Oct. 7. With two conference games remaining, Brandywine sits comfortably on top of the league with a 7-0 mark and is 11-3 overall.

The Lions have now scored 42 goals in seven league matches and conceded just four scores during that stretch. Brandywine, which looks to go unbeaten in the league for the second-straight year, has not dropped a PSUAC men’s soccer game since Sept. 19, 2015. The Lions host Penn State Beaver at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, for Senior Day.

While the soccer teams both own seven-game winning streaks, the longest winning run at Brandywine belongs to the volleyball team. The Lions have won nine-straight matches since Sept. 23 and have dropped just one set during that time.

The Lions completed a season sweep of Penn State Mont Alto on Thursday, Oct. 5, winning at home by a 3-0 score, before cruising to a three-set triumph on Saturday at Penn State York.

This week will be busy for the Lions, who have five matches, all on the road. Brandywine plays its final non-league game on Monday, Oct. 9, at Bryn Athyn before visiting Penn State Scranton and Penn State Lehigh Valley for quad matches this weekend.

The Brandywine men’s golf team ended its regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 3, with a fourth-place showing at the Penn State Wilkes Barre Invitational. Freshman Kyle North shot a round of 88 to post a top-10 finish.

The Lions now have their sights set on the PSUAC/USCAA Championships this week in State College. On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, Brandywine will compete on the Blue Course at Penn State against the top teams in the conference and in the nation for a national and league championship.

The Brandywine men’s cross-country team had a successful home invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7, as junior John Li and freshman Brendan Cleary both bested Li’s previous school record 8K time. Cleary finished the race in 28:58 to claim fifth place, while Li was five seconds behind him in sixth place, eclipsing Li’s school record of 29:46 set last year.

As a team, the Lions finished second with 57 points and were the top PSUAC team at the meet. Brandywine finished six points behind team champion Valley Forge.

The women’s tennis team continued its season at Kean on Friday, Oct. 6, suffering a 9-0 setback. Junior Katie Corey won four games during her top-flight singles match to lead the Lions.

Brandywine closes out the fall with a match at Rutgers-Camden on Oct. 22.
