Winterich named Penn State Smeal’s Brand Award winner

Dave Winterich, instructor in marketing in the Penn State Smeal College of Business, is the 2016 recipient of the Fred Brand Jr. Excellence in Teaching Award.

Winterich, who joined the Smeal faculty in 2011, teaches five undergraduate marketing courses:

  • MKTG 301 Principles of Marketing
  • MKTG 330 Consumer Behavior
  • MKTG 422 Advertising and Sales Promotion Management
  • MKTG 440 Services Marketing
  • MKTG 445 Global Marketing

The Brand Award, established with a donation from 1932 Penn State alumnus Fred Brand Jr., recognizes outstanding non-tenure track faculty at Smeal who have demonstrated excellence in the area of undergraduate teaching via subject matter expertise, the ability to inspire students to high achievements, and improvements made to the tools and conditions for teaching.

A committee chose Winterich from a pool of nominees. One of his nominators wrote:

“Dave is a demanding teacher who sees it as his mission to give his students a quality education that will form the foundation of their future professional advancement. Students appreciate the career advice that Dave offers them and I often see him talking to his advisees in his office.

“There is clear evidence that Dave Winterich is an excellent teacher and that he makes an important contribution to the teaching mission of the Smeal College. Dave is an extremely valuable ambassador for the Marketing Department, who attracts new students to our major because he sets such a good example as an instructor and adviser.”

Winterich has 10 years of marketing experience, primarily in the logistics industry. He worked for two third-party logistics services providers, and served in a consultant role for the Texas Transportation Institute in College Station, Texas.
