Capacity crowd expected at Rec Hall for Bernie Sanders’ Penn State visit

April 19, 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Democratic Party presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ visit to Penn State on Tuesday, April 19, is expected to draw a capacity crowd to Rec Hall on the University Park campus.

The event is ticketed, but seating is general admission and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Possession of a ticket does not guarantee admission to the event.

Once Rec Hall’s 6,300-person capacity for the event is reached, ticket holders who are not admitted can watch the program from a designated overflow area on the West Intramural Fields, located across North Atherton Street from Rec Hall near the White Golf Course. A video feed of the program will be shown in the overflow area.

Authorities are urging pedestrians traveling from Rec Hall to the overflow venue to use the IST bridge to cross North Atherton Street to ensure both their safety and that of motorists using the roadway. Police and volunteers will be present to help pedestrians safely reach the overflow venue.

Campus roadways near Rec Hall will experience a significant influx of additional traffic during the afternoon and continuing into the evening. Faculty, staff and students who normally travel this area of campus are encouraged to seek alternate routes, if possible, and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

To reduce vehicle traffic near Rec Hall, those attending the event are encouraged to use alternative modes of transportation, such as walking, biking and mass transit. The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) serves stops near Rec Hall via a number of different community service routes.

Attendees traveling by vehicle are encouraged to carpool and to park in one of the University’s commuter parking areas, Lot 44 (located east of the Bryce Jordan Center) or Stadium West (located west of Beaver Stadium). From there, visitors can use one of the no-fare CATA Loop or Link transit services to travel to and from Rec Hall.
