Librarian Reiter receives Library Journal’s ‘Mover and Shaker’ national honor

March 21, 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Lauren Reiter, the Sally W. Kalin Librarian for Learning Innovations and business liaison librarian at Penn State’s University Libraries, has been named a 2016 “Mover and Shaker” in the library industry by the national publication Library Journal.

For the 15th year, Library Journal named Movers and Shakers — 54 outstanding professionals — committed to providing excellent service and shaping the future of libraries. Reiter was selected because of her commitment to the profession and for championing financial literacy efforts at Penn State.

She developed a financial literacy resource guide and then partnered in 2013 with two faculty members to offer programs for National Financial Literacy Month in April that evolved into monthly MoneyCounts financial literacy presentations. The following year, Reiter collaborated with the University Park Undergraduate Association to establish the Student Financial Education Center, where students are trained as peer educators to offer one-on-one consultations about money management.

Because of Reiter’s efforts, Penn State’s University Libraries has been able to establish an endowment for financial education at Penn State, which will further her work. Library Journal honored Reiter for these achievements.

“This year’s class of 54 joins a group of talented professionals who are committed, passionate, and invigorated — each alone and all together transforming the library world and the communities it impacts for the better,” Rebecca T. Miller, editorial director of Library Journal and School Library Journal, said.

Reiter has been a faculty member at the University Libraries since October 2012, and received the Sally W. Kalin Librarianship in July 2015. She received her undergraduate degree in English from Kenyon College in 2007 and her master’s degree in library information science in 2012 from the University of Pittsburgh.

The 2016 Movers and Shakers were selected by the editors of Library Journal, one of the oldest and most respected trade publications covering the library field, encompassing public, academic and special libraries.

Each of the Movers and Shakers is prominently featured in the March 15 issue of Library Journal and will be celebrated at a special reception in June during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida. The print feature’s companion website is sponsored by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and available at www.libraryjournal.com/movers2016.
