May 27, 2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The expanding role family caregivers provide aging relatives and its corresponding challenges will be discussed during the next episode of WPSU Penn State’s “Conversations LIVE” at 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 28.

The AARP estimates that, until the year 2030, 8,000 baby boomers will turn 65 years old each day. Baby boomers represent the generation born between 1946-64.

WPSU-TV’s Patty Satalia will discuss the emotional, health and financial challenges facing caregivers with Jane McDowell and Gwen McGhan, both of whom work at The John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Penn State; Katherine Pearson, Penn State professor of law; and Ai-jen Poo, co-director of Caring Across Generations.

“Conversations LIVE” — an interactive show that takes viewers’ phone calls, emails and questions via Twitter — will air on WPSU-TV, WPSU-FM and online at wpsu.org. Viewers can join the discussion by calling 800-543-8242, emailing connect@wpsu.org or tweeting @WPSU.

McDowell and McGhan serve as a project director and the project administrator, respectively, for the Hartford Center. The center, which was established within the College of Nursing in 2007, includes nurse educators, clinicians and researches who look to improve health care for older adults.

Pearson, who serves as a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Elder Law Task Force, specializes in legal issues facing older adults with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to elder care. The professor earned her law degree from the University of Miami after receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona.

Poo, who also acts as the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, helped launch Caring Across Generations in 2011. The organization addresses widespread unemployment and the coming need for care of the nation’s expanding aging population.

“Conversations LIVE: Caring for Mom and Dad” will follow an hour-long PBS documentary that explores the challenges facing caregivers. For more information and to watch archived episodes of “Conversations LIVE,” visit wpsu.org/conversationslive.
