March 19, 2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- D.J. Newbill has been named to the 2015 Big Ten All-Tournament Team, the league announced Sunday (March 15) following the championship game. He is the only member of the all-tournament team not play in the final game, joining Branden Dawson (MSU), Travis Trice (MSU), Nigel Hayes (WIS) and Frank Kaminsky (WIS).

The Second Team All-Big Ten and USBWA All-District selection averaged 21.0 points per game with 10 rebounds, seven assists, six steals and four blocks in Penn State's three tourney games. The 13th-seeded Nittany Lions knocked off No. 12 seed Nebraska and No. 5 seed Iowa before falling to fourth-seeded Purdue in the quarterfinals Friday.

It was the first appearance in the quarterfinal-round for Penn State since 2011 and the fourth time the PSU program has won at least two games in the league tourney. The Nittany Lions join champion Wisconsin and runner-up Michigan State as the only teams to finish participation in the tourney with a winning record.

Newbill is the fifth all-tournament selection in Penn State's history, joining Talor Battle (2011), Joe Crispin (2000 & 2001) and Jarrett Stephens (2000).

The senior standout guard has 704 points on the season, becoming just the second PSU player all-time to pass 700 points and trailing Jesse Arnelle's 60-year old scoring record by just 27 points. He owns the No. 2 and No. 7 (604; 2014) spots in single-season scoring as one of three players to hold multiple spots in the Top 10.

His Penn State career points (1,812) ranked fourth all-time, despite spending just three years in the Blue and White, while his four-year NCAA points (2,105) are the 10th-most of active Division I players.
