Donations needed to make a happy Thanksgiving at Allentown shelter

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Penn State Lehigh Valley Student Life will hold its annual Thanksgiving food drive through Nov. 19. A campus tradition for many years, the drive provides complete Thanksgiving meals for every family served by the Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown. This year, the campus has been asked to provide more than ever.

“The shelter has increased its housing, so we have 50 families to feed this year instead of 42. It will be a challenge, but at Penn State we like a challenge,” said Leyna Belinsky, coordinator of student life at Penn State Lehigh Valley.

In order to meet the increased need, the campus has a goal of raising $1,000 to purchase the perishable items for each meal: turkey, rolls and pie. Monetary donations will be accepted in the forms of cash, checks made payable to Penn State, and grocers’ free turkey vouchers. The campus will also accept non-perishable donations of stuffing, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy and juice.

All items can be dropped off in the Student Affairs office (Room 214). The campus community will gather to pack and deliver the meals to the shelter on Friday, Nov. 21.
