2014 United Way campaign kicks off

October 21, 2014

Madlyn Hanes, vice president for Commonwealth Campuses, is sharing the following message with the Penn State community:

Dear Community Members,

Centre County United Way agencies offer critical programs and services that support families, promote the well-being of children, and improve the quality of life for residents of the county. Penn State colleagues give generously to the annual Penn State United Way campaign with a shared goal of advancing Centre County by supporting the partner agencies and their respective programs that serve the needs of our local community.

It is my privilege to chair this year’s Penn State United Way campaign. I am particularly pleased to serve with the members of the Penn State United Way steering committee who, as representatives of the various administrative and academic units of the University, give their time and talent to promote community-centered programs such as the Day of Caring and Trash to Treasure — programs that enjoy broad participation from volunteers across the University.   I am grateful to them for their service leadership.

This year Penn State has set a goal of $846,000, 40 percent of the Centre County United Way total of $2,125,000 needed to fund over 100 programs offered through the 34 United Way partner agencies. There is good news. Our campaign is off to a healthy start bolstered by the success of numerous special events and continued retiree contributions. This week we will kick off the payroll deduction portion of the campaign which affords donors the opportunity to spread their gifts across 12 months.

If you are among the faculty and staff members who contributed last year through payroll deduction or an annual gift, we thank you and hope that you will continue to contribute and consider increasing your giving this year. For those of you who have not contributed in the past, we hope that this year you will join those who do.  No matter the amount, each contribution makes a difference.

Please accept my heartfelt appreciation and thanks in advance for your ongoing support of United Way.
