September 22, 2014

At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, Penn State Great Valley will host a free screening of “Growing Cities," a documentary film that examines the role of urban farming in America. The film asks how much power urban agriculture has to revitalize our cities and change the way we eat. This screening is sponsored by The Consortium for Sustainable Business Development (CSBD), an organization created in 2010 at Penn State Great Valley through a grant provided by Penn State’s Sustainability Institute at Penn State. The CSBD acts as a forum for business, academic, and civic collaboration and is centered on social responsibility and sustainable business practices.

In their search for answers, "Growing Cities" filmmakers Dan Susman and Andrew Monbouquette take a road trip and meet the men and women who are challenging the way this country grows and distributes its food, one vacant city lot, rooftop garden and backyard chicken coop at a time.

Penn State Great Valley provides a cadre of professors with diverse knowledge of sustainable business practices for the CSBD. As a multi-disciplinary faculty, they have the capacity to address issues of sustainable business through various lenses including accounting and finance; operations, supply chain and marketing; and management practicesIn addition to ongoing academic research, the faculty created a Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Management Practices, which can be taken as a standalone series of four courses or in combination with the master of business administration degree program.

The Consortium for Sustainable Business Development is pleased to have the chance to support a documentary that is bringing awareness to the importance of urban agriculture. “Growing Cities” is not merely about food; it is about the effect urban farms have on their local communities. Much like the CSBD, the film highlights the importance of building a community concentrated on social responsibility and sustainability. The documentary tells the stories of urban farmers who have impacted their cities by calling into question the way food is grown. “Growing Cities” and the CSBD are calling neighborhoods to action to make steps towards a sustainable future that is centered on the triple bottom line: people, profit and planet.

The CSBD encourages sustainable business practices as the region’s hub for organizations seeking to learn and improve in all areas of sustainability and social responsibility. Penn State Great Valley’s graduate program offerings, faculty research and organizational partnerships position the CSBD as a leading catalyst for the growth and proliferation of sustainable business practices.
