Businesses unite to conquer pediatric cancer at Penn State Lehigh Valley Day

August 05, 2014

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Businesses in downtown Bethlehem are coming together from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 to raise funds for pediatric cancer in a new event called Penn State Lehigh Valley Day.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. with the ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony for The Shoppe at Hotel Bethlehem, the new location where customers can get their Penn State Creamery ice cream. Participating downtown businesses will donate five percent of their sales from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to benefit pediatric cancer.

Customers can purchase an event passport for $5 online via the Downtown Bethlehem Association (DBA) website or at Hotel Bethlehem the day of the event that will contain the list of participating DBA members and a map of their locations. The passport will be stamped at each participating business customer’s visit and can be entered into a contest to win prizes including a two-night stay at Hotel Bethlehem, Penn State swag, a DBA gift certificate, restaurant and shop gift certificates, and local merchandise. Proceeds from passport sales also will be donated to pediatric cancer.

The idea was born jointly by the relationship between Penn State Lehigh Valley and Historic Hotel Bethlehem. The hotel has been selling 12 flavors of Berkey Creamery ice cream in its restaurants and at an ice cream stand in the lower lobby since September 2013. The hotel approached the DBA with the idea of holding a special fundraising event to benefit pediatric cancer, which Penn State has special ties to because of its annual THON weekend. THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, has raised more than $114 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey's Children's Hospital since 1977.

A downtown party will be held on Main Street where the fun and festivities will feature the Nittany Lion, who will be on hand for pictures throughout the day, and a visit by Sean Geltz, Penn State Lehigh Valley's THON child. There also will be live music and activities for children throughout the area. The popular Nittany Lion bench seen around the region will have a new home that day on historic Main Street. Social media users are encouraged to use the hashtags #ifoundthelion and #PSULVatHotelB when posting comments or photos about the event. There also will be special opportunities for Penn State alumni to win college swag.

"Our local alumni are enthusiastic about supporting THON, and partnering with the Downtown Bethlehem Association for Penn State Lehigh Valley Day was the perfect way to bring this cause to the community," said Elena Douvanis, alumni liaison at Penn State Lehigh Valley. "We are looking forward to seeing our students, faculty, staff and alumni out on Main Street, supporting local businesses for a cause that's close to our hearts, and Berkey Creamery ice cream at Hotel Bethlehem is a wonderful addition to the downtown landscape."

"We’ve seen from the constant requests for Creamery ice cream at our hotel just how passionate Lehigh Valley residents are for all things Penn State. And the entire community each year sees how students and alumni alike are passionate about raising money for pediatric cancer," said Hotel Bethlehem Director of Sales and Marketing Kelly Ronalds. "The Hotel Bethlehem is proud to take the lead on this exciting new event and appreciates the support of our fellow downtown Bethlehem businesses in making it happen."

"When Bruce Haines, the managing partner of Hotel Bethlehem, brought the idea for Penn State Lehigh Valley Day to the DBA, we were excited to get involved and make it happen," said Lynn Collins Cunningham, senior vice president of Bethlehem Initiatives for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. "We’re proud to have Penn State Lehigh Valley in our community and share their passion for supporting pediatric cancer with this new event."
