PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – On Wednesday, March 19, students are invited to see advanced sustainability concepts in action and visit Penn State’s GridSTAR Center at a Schreyer Honors College Shaping the Future Summit Event titled Energy and Sustainability Day. Located at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia, the GridSTAR Center is a unique education and research environment designed to accelerate the future of energy efficiency, renewable energy and smart grid technologies.

In attending this event, students will gain an understanding of the how diverse industry partners and Penn State faculty are collaborating to solve critical issues facing energy infrastructure. They will be immersed in the Smart Grid Experience Center where the daily operations of the electric grid are accessible in a hands-on learning environment with demonstration modules.

The Energy and Sustainability Day involves various activities to ensure a comprehensive experience during the visit to Philadelphia. Students will begin with an introduction from The Navy Yard leaders leading to an informative tour of The Navy Yard campus, with stops including Glaxo-Smith-Klein, TastyKake and Urban Outfitters headquarters. Each student will be provided with a meal voucher and will enjoy lunch at Urban Outfitter’s Shop 543. The remainder of the afternoon will be spent touring the GridSTAR Center, where students will attend various energy and sustainability workshops and have the opportunity to meet with key industry partners. A student-led discussion will be held at the end of the day to reflect and challenge students to develop useful insight for the future of energy and sustainability.
