Penn State students join the No Impact sustainability experiment

No Impact Week is a one-week experiment in sustainable living that allows students to experience the difference lowering their impact can have on their quality of life, their community and their planet. Penn State’s participation in the experiment is sponsored by Residence Life, Housing, the Eco-Reps, and the Sustainability Institute.

The week began Feb. 2 with a clothing swap in Findlay Commons. Students in residence halls will work through a series of eight daily challenges, from decreasing trash production and residence hall energy use to eating sustainably. The week will wrap up with a day of Giving Back at Penn State’s own recycling center on Feb. 8.

“No Impact Week is not about telling people to sacrifice something,” said event organizer Andy Narotsky, undergraduate student in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. “It’s more about being open to a new way of living that is better for both people and the planet.”

“No Impact Week is an easy way to make a difference for the environment and for Penn State. We think it will also lead to a sense of personal fulfillment, and be a lot of fun,” he said.

Each day, the Penn State eco-reps will host events at University Park, to encourage participation.

No Impact Week upcoming events:

5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 -- Food
Local food exploration, Findlay Commons: Try some local food samples and learn about the benefits of eating local.

5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 – Energy
Energy audits, Findlay Commons: Learn how to reduce energy use and use a bike to make smoothies.

5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7 – Water
The Tap Challenge: Do you know how much money you are spending on bottled water each semester? Take on the Tap Challenge and put money back in your pocket.

12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 – Giving Back
Volunteering: Help clean up Penn State's recycling center. Meet at the basketball courts outside Findlay at 12:30 pm.

Inspired by Colin Beavan's experiment in low-carbon living, documented in the popular "No Impact Man" book, film and blog, more than 50,000 people worldwide have participated in a low-impact living challenge of their very own through the No Impact Week Experiment. The experience is about discovering how living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle can increase personal fulfillment, health, happiness, and time with friends.
