Still Life: Horsing around at the stable

August 01, 2003

Students in Penn State's equine science major have the benefit of hands-on learning. The University's equine facilities include two horse barns with approximately 35 stalls, indoor arena, round pen, paddocks and pastures. Currently, the University has about 40 registered Quarter Horses, as well as a number of mixed-breed ponies. The horses are used in teaching labs, student research projects and faculty research in reproductive physiology and behavior. According to Nancy Diehl, assistant professor of equine science, "The breeding program has served principally as a tool for teaching Penn State's equine science students all aspects of horse production and management."
