Funding available for GIS research

June 24, 2004

The Penn State Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Council has launched an initiative designed to provide limited seed money and support to researchers seeking external funding for GIS-related research.

The initiative provides funding at two levels. Level I funds are intended to support with full or partial funding, GIS-related workshops or seminars, individual GIS-related visitor/speakers to any of the University campuses, and to create and support interdisciplinary GIS-groups. Level I funding also may include funding for meetings. The range for Level I funding is up to $750.

Level II projects should be new or ongoing GIS-related research projects of faculty or staff with potential to gain external funding in the future. The funds also may be used for the creation of interdisciplinary research centers or working groups involved in GIS-related activities as well as expenses for travel, speakers or other activities related to GIS-related research projects. The range for Level II funding is between $750 and $5,000.

Proposals for Level I and Level II funding may be submitted any time during the academic year. Due to limited funding available for the initial phase in fiscal year 2004-05 of this initiative, proposals will be considered on a competitive basis based on merit. It is anticipated that at least five Level II funding proposals will be awarded.
