DuBois -- Art instructor Mary Vollero of Bellefonte has been named the Penn Stater of the quarter for fourth quarter of 2005 at Penn State DuBois.

Vollero was nominated by Jim May, associate professor of English, who remarked on her contributions on campus, including a photo gallery project for campus buildings and the campus Social Security number conversion project, an effort to update individual University faculty, staff and student identification numbers in order to keep Social Security numbers confidential. Vollero was the faculty liaison for the conversion project.

"What I'm most impressed by are the photos that she had hung up in the Hiller and the new DEF buildings," May said. "These are a fine photo record of major events. The photos are high in quality and well exhibited. She seems to be a dedicated teacher, with many varied preps, and she tries new approaches."

Vollero said she appreciates the award, calling the accolades a vote of confidence in both her work as an educator and as an artist.

Vollero began teaching at the DuBois campus in 2002 and has taught eight different classes, including three online Web courses. She also designs the annual holiday card for the campus. She has a master's degree in fine art from Penn State University with a concentration in print making.

"Since I came to Penn State DuBois in 2002, I think my own artwork and my teaching have flourished. The students here have been a joy to teach, and the faculty and staff, couldn't be more positive and supportive," Vollero wrote upon accepting the award. "Thanks to all of the photographers who contribute to the Hiller and DEF exhibits by sending their photographs. Their images make the job fun."

This semester Vollero taught two sections of Art 010 (a Web-based digital photography and design class), Introduction to Printmaking, and Integrated Art, a team-taught course with music instructor Paul Fehrenbach. Her students' printmaking artwork currently is on display at the Hiller library.
