Ten alumni elected, three appointed to Alumni Council

University Park, Pa. -- Ten Penn State alumni have been elected and three appointed to Alumni Council, the governing body of the Penn State Alumni Association.

Elected to Alumni Council for three-year terms from July 1, 2007, to June 30, 2010, are incumbents Darryl E. Bundrige, Philadelphia; Diane Y. Delozier, York, Pa.; Rex B. Gedney, Norwalk, Conn.; Marilyn Minor Haas, Oakton, Va.; Patricia (Jessie) Hayes, Lemont, Pa.; James R. Powell Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.; and Kathleen Arnold Smarilli, Lancaster, Pa. Newly elected to Alumni Council are Patricia (Trish) Lawlor, Horsham, Pa.; Richard Randall, York, Pa.; and Laurie B. Williams, Harrisburg, Pa.

Incoming Alumni Association President David C. Han filled three appointed positions on Alumni Council. The appointees are Alan R. Gedrich, Philadelphia; Kenneth D. Henderson, Harrisburg, Pa.; and Kevin R. Steele, Norristown, Pa.

Alumni Council is an all-volunteer governing body that guides and directs policy for the Penn State Alumni Association. The council determines strategies and programs to be carried out by the Alumni Association staff and is responsible for electing the Alumni Association president and vice president.

In this year's election, 13,574 Alumni Association members cast ballots -- an 11 percent participation rate among eligible voters -- with more than 43 percent submitting their ballots via the Internet.

Following is a brief biography about each newly named Alumni Council member:

Darryl E. Bundrige of Philadelphia graduated from Penn State College of Communications in 1993. He is the director of Afterschool Programs and Community Education at Foundations in Morrestown, N.J. Bundrige has served on Alumni Council for the past three years and has been the co-chair of the Program Development Committee.

Diane Y. Delozier of York, Pa., has served on Alumni Council for the past five years and has been a member of the Executive Board and the Budget & Finance Committee. She is an engineering consultant with Delozier and Associates and graduated from Penn State in 1974.

Rex B. Gedney of Norwalk, Conn., is a 1980 graduate of the College of Arts and Architecture. He is a principal architect with Crozier Gedney Architects PC. Gedney has served on Alumni Council for the past two years and has served on the Awards Committee.

Alan R. Gedrich of Philadelphia graduated from Penn State in 1982 with a business degree. He is a partner with the law firm of Stradely Ronon LLP and has served on Alumni Council for the past two years, serving as co-chair of the Budget & Finance Committee.

Marilyn Minor Haas of Oakton, Va., is the owner of Cruise Aweigh travel agency. She graduated from Penn State in 1953 and has served on Alumni Council for the past three years. Haas has been a member of the Program Development Committee.

Patricia (Jessie) Hayes of Lemont, Pa., is a 1975 graduate from the College of Education. She is the assistant to the director for information and diversity programs at Penn State's Applied Research Laboratory. Hayes has been on Alumni Council for the past three years, serving on the Executive Board and the Awards and Diversity Committees.

Kenneth D. Henderson of Harrisburg, Pa., was a member of Alumni Council from 1995 to 2003, serving on the Executive Board and a number of committees. He is the deputy chief counsel for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue and has a 1971 degree in business.

Patricia (Trish) A. Lawlor of Horsham, Pa., is senior single family house specialist with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. She graduated from Penn State in 1978 with a degree in business. This is her first term on Alumni Council.

James R. Powell Jr. of Hummelstown, Pa., holds two Penn State degrees: a 1988 degree in science and a 1992 medical degree from the Penn State College of Medicine. He is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist with Penn State's Children's Hospital. Powell has been a member of Alumni Council for three years and has served on the Volunteer Support Committee.

Richard Randall of York, Pa., graduated from Penn State with a 1971 degree in engineering. He is the president of New Level Advisors, LLC. This is his first term on Alumni Council.

Kathleen Arnold Smarilli of Lancaster, Pa., is the Central Pennsylvania regional president of Wachovia Bank. Smarilli graduated from Penn State in 1971 from the College of the Liberal Arts and has served on Alumni Council for five years. Most recently, she has served on the Executive Board and chaired the Budget & Finance Committee.

Kevin R. Steele of Norristown, Pa., is the deputy district attorney and chief of the trials division for Montgomery County in Pennsylvania. A 1992 graduate of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, Steele has served on Alumni Council since 2005, co-chairing the Grassroots Network Committee.

Laurie B. Williams of Harrisburg, Pa., is new to Alumni Council. She is a 1990 graduate of the College of Agricultural Sciences and is the president and CEO of L.B. Williams & Associates.
